#184 All students should be required to study art and music in secondary school, for or against? Why?

    こんにちは!

    梅雨に入り、ジメジメと蒸し暑い日が続きますが、皆さま体調など崩されていませんか?

    "All students should be required to study art and music in secondary school, for or against? Why?"

     

     

    In my opinion, all students should not be required to study art and music in secondary school.

    There are two reasons why I disagree with this statement.

     

    If we spent time on teaching art and music, it would be better to let them acquire logical thinking. If we spent time to do art or music, we would be better off teaching some ethics to students. It would be much better to let students acquire a critical thinking process. Logical assumption is what is necessary for the future generation. If you can acquire critical thinking, you would barely be in a panic because you have the daily habit to “think”, thus, you would analyze the situation around you. If you could decipher what kind of issues you are facing, you would find some solutions more easily.

     

    It would be way better to teach ethics. Ethical thinking is also important for the future generation. If there are some terrible things that happened, such as terrorism, it would be better thinking with logic and ethics than to just sympathize. If you could think logically, and ethically, you would find these events as “odd”. That is what will be needed for the future.

     

    However, art and music can teach them “suffering of creation”, so it is not absolutely unnecessary.

    To sum up, we would be better off to learn ethics and logical thinking.

    You have provided a clear reason why you do not think art and music should be a mandatory subject at school.

     

    Of course, there are some fundamental subjects which are necessary for students to learn, but I think giving students the option to learn the subjects they are interested in is equally as important. Forcing a subject on students might have the opposite effect. Art and music can incorporate critical thinking and ethics after rudimentary knowledge has been taught.
