ESSAY OF THE WEEK

#4 My hobbies

1.

I have a few hobbies. I like to listen to music , watch movies and go traveling. I also like to reorganize my house. Since I've been a child, I sometimes moved furniture in my room. Around the time the season will change , I feel next season is coming, so I want to reorganize my house. In the beginning of our marriage, my husband would be surprised when he came back home and saw that room was reorganized, but now he is getting used to it.
When we went back to my hometown, my parents were reorganizing their home. As soon as we arrived at their house, my parents made us help them move furniture. Then my husband realized that reorganizing room runs in the family.

教師より
Wow , you must have a lot of energy! It's a lot of work reorganizing a home. But I'm glad you can have fun moving furniture around. I should be less lazy and more like you!

2.

I have various hobbies. I like not only outdoor things but also indoor things. For example, surfing, canoeing, scuba diving, indoor-rock climbing, traveling and so on. I like various sports. Especially, indoor-rock climbing is fun. It is exciting. I have done indoor-rock climbing for two years. I go to my favorite gym almost every weekend. My favorite gym has a climbing area and work out area. You can use both areas and the renal charge for the gym is 600 yen per day. Anyone can climb, I have even seen women in their 50's climbing. Sports are fun and good for the health. I will continue with my favorite sports.

教師より
You are very active! I have tried all the sports you mentioned except for scuba diving. It's hard to exercise every week. If you like indoor rock climbing so much maybe someday you will go mountaineering. There are a lot of mountains around Hiroshima so you wouldn't have to go far.

#3 Whether lifetime employment is good or bad

Life time employment is still common in Japan, especially amongst men. The longer they stay in a company, the higher the salary they can get.
I think life time employment is bad. It isn't good for a company's development. Employees will set their minds on doing the job if the salary raise is based on their ability.
A employer should employ a variety of people except new graduate students.
If the same person works at the same area in the company for a long time, the company will not change. A company always should get new ideas from every area.
A person who works at several different companies has much knowledge and has a broad outlook.
Japan has to change the way it employs people.

教師より
I agree with you, new people bring new ideas. It must be very routine to do the same job.

#2 How I would spend 100 million yen

How I would spend one hundred million yen'です。

If I got ¥100 million, I would spend it on traveling all over the world. I especially would like to visit the places which are designated as World Heritage sates, of course including those in Japan. At the present, more than 800 properties in the world are officially designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites. When I counted the sites I've ever visited, I found that it's only about 20. I wonder how many sites I could visit the rest of my life and how much money I would need for it; however I would like to actually see them and feel the history and culture. I'm sure this trip would make a
great impression on me.
If I still had money and time left after that trip, I would set up my own cafe at a tranquil place. I would grow flowers, fruits and vegetables in my garden and serve many kinds of dishes and desserts to my customers. Of course, I would make original plates, cups and saucers for dishes, using my pottery skills. And sometimes I would give a small party and invite my parents and friends. It would be a great pleasure for me.
I sometimes dream about getting such an amount of money, however, I'm afraid that too much money changes not only our lives but also our personalities in some cases. I think that we should never forget the value of money.

教師より
You've been to 20 World Heritage sites? That's quite impressive. Perhaps you can count one hand the number I've been to. There is an expression, maybe it's from the bible, that says, "Money is the root of evil." I don't entirely agree, but I understand the statement behind it.

#1 Dangerous animals in Japan

今回のtopicは'dangerous animals in Japan'です

The climate of Hiroshima is comparatively mild, so I have few chances to think about dangerous animals. However, there are some kinds of dangerous animals in Japan, for example, brown bears and poisonous snakes. Sometimes, I hear a news report that ' a brown bear killed a man who went in a forest to gather mushrooms.' And lately, bears come down to villages from forests and take fruits, vegetables or something like that. It's very scary that bears are invading our lives, but human beings have responsibility for the problems, because we've cut down a lot of trees in the mountains and have destroyed the animals habitat.

In Okinawa there are 22 types of snakes, and 8 types of them are poisonous and it is said that in Okinawa, you can find snakes everywhere like in parks as well as mountains. Every year, about 100 people are bitten by a type of snakes called Habu, only in Okinawa. Snakes called Mamushi are in Hiroshima. They are smaller but more poisonous than Habu, and I heard nearly 1500 people are bitten by them every year. I've never seen any dangerous animals, and I hope I'll never seen them.

I didn't think the number of people bitten by Mamushi was so high. Luckily in Ireland we don't have snakes because St. Patrick drove them out years and years ago. I think snakes are scarier than bears because they blend in with their surroundings very well so it's hard to see them until you're right on top of them, and then it's too late - you're dead. But if I had to choose which I'd prefer to be locked in a room with I'd say snake because I don't think I could ever beat a bear with my bare hands, I might have a small chance if it was a snake.
