#18 Japan's waste disposal problem
2010.02.23 Tuesday
Since many countries encountered environmental problems and wide-spread pollution in the 1970's and the 1980's, many countries have become more attentive to the preservation of Earth. Yet, personally, I believe that human activities are still damaging the Earth.
First of all, we are confronted with the problem of 'global warming'. The cause of this problem is carbon dioxide which is emitted because of some human activities. Though many countries are concerned about this problem and try to restrict the emission of carbon dioxide, it is estimated that the temperature of the Earth will become higher several degrees in the next hundred years. Because the effect of this global warming is unaccountable, we must make as much effort as we can. An example of this endeavor is the 'Kyoto protocol', the agreement which determines that each country has responsibility for restricting the amount of carbon dioxide which the country emits. Yet, regretfully, some countries will not ratify this agreement because of their own economic development. This fact shows that the egoism of human beings is still damaging the Earth.
Additionally, our activities are still discharging industrial wastes and polluting materials into the air and the water of the Earth. These materials have had a bad influence on many kinds of living things. Though the number of countries and companies which are trying to improve this contamination is increasing, it is a fact that many countries and companies are still neglecting this problem and contaminating the Earth.
In conclusion, human beings are trying to make the Earth a better place to live. For example, we are ameliorating the ozone layer by restricting ozone-depleting substances. But, considering the other problems such as 'global warming' and wide-spread pollution, I must say that human activities are still damaging the Earth.

Very good examples and vocabulary.
I agree with you, it is a scary problem and I hope we can do something to improve it soon.
