ESSAY OF THE WEEK

#18 Japan's waste disposal problem

Since many countries encountered environmental problems and wide-spread pollution in the 1970's and the 1980's, many countries have become more attentive to the preservation of Earth. Yet, personally, I believe that human activities are still damaging the Earth.
First of all, we are confronted with the problem of 'global warming'. The cause of this problem is carbon dioxide which is emitted because of some human activities. Though many countries are concerned about this problem and try to restrict the emission of carbon dioxide, it is estimated that the temperature of the Earth will become higher several degrees in the next hundred years. Because the effect of this global warming is unaccountable, we must make as much effort as we can. An example of this endeavor is the 'Kyoto protocol', the agreement which determines that each country has responsibility for restricting the amount of carbon dioxide which the country emits. Yet, regretfully, some countries will not ratify this agreement because of their own economic development. This fact shows that the egoism of human beings is still damaging the Earth.
Additionally, our activities are still discharging industrial wastes and polluting materials into the air and the water of the Earth. These materials have had a bad influence on many kinds of living things. Though the number of countries and companies which are trying to improve this contamination is increasing, it is a fact that many countries and companies are still neglecting this problem and contaminating the Earth.
In conclusion, human beings are trying to make the Earth a better place to live. For example, we are ameliorating the ozone layer by restricting ozone-depleting substances. But, considering the other problems such as 'global warming' and wide-spread pollution, I must say that human activities are still damaging the Earth.

Very good examples and vocabulary.
I agree with you, it is a scary problem and I hope we can do something to improve it soon.

#17 Why I would like to live in a foreign country

Why I would like to live in a foreign country"です。

If I could, I would like to live in another country.
I know that living abroad is not easy. First, adapting to an unfamiliar environment is more or less difficult and stressful, especially if you do not have a good command of the language there. Second, you cannot go home immediately when an emergent matter arises back home. Third, you may encounter unpleasant events such as being discriminated against or being swindled because your being Japanese.
However, I believe living overseas is meaningful, at least for me, regardless of the difficulties of it. First of all, putting yourself into a totally different environment from that in Japan is so adventurous and exiting, because you cannot guess what would happen next. You can experience something new at every moment in the first stage of your stay. If you live in Japan, you can easily imagine what your life will be like life in Japan can be stable but at the same time it can be routine and boring. Second, being exposed to diverse cultures helps you to develop flexible ideas and wide views. Consequently, you may be able to accept various senses of value. Simultaneously, you can be also aware how people outside Japan would see Japan or Japanese. It gives you a bilateral outlook towards the world. Third, you can play the role of an individual ambassador. The local people in the country you live in can be introduced to a part of Japanese culture by having you around. And if you come back to Japan, you also bring some cultural impacts with you from the country where you stayed for some time. So I would like to live overseas.

“日本”という“海外”に住む教師から

Well, you've certainly captured the feel of my first month in Japan, and my constant wonder and amazement.
I only hope that you are right, and this experience will enrich me as a person and help me become more open-minded.

#16 The problem of the aging society

The problem of the aging society"です。

The aging society is a serious and urgent problem in Japan. As the birth-rate in Japan becomes lower and lower, the percentage of older people becomes higher.
And many problems, such as the shrinking working force and pension and nurcing-care systems occur. It's really a complicated problem.
I don't have much knowledge about this problem but I think Japan should learn how to deal with its aging society from other countries. Maybe the Kingdom of Sweden also has an aging society, but it copes with this problem well and it known as a welfare state. I think we can get many ideas about how to deal with our aging society from learning about the systems of welfare states.

Sweden. That's interesting suggestion. I'm far from an expert on Sweden, but I know that they pay high taxes. The tax reserve is used to fund social programs, or "safety nets" like unemployment and retirement benefits.

#15 My ideal future

今日のessayは"My ideal future"です。

I am always excited when I imagine my future.
I can see my future clearly, but it's not ideal. An ideal future never happens because bad things always happen. I will face ordeals again and again, and I will get over each of them. Getting over something is one of the important parts of growing up. Although we can't grow up without facing ordeals, we are afraid of them.
I want more than 2 children, and I want to play roller hockey with them. I'm sure that it would be fun.
Since my husband is competent, he will be promoted sooner or later. I will support him. I make delicious meals everyday, and he's glad to eat them. Although now I can't make sweets well, I'll make my children healthy and make delicious sweets everyday.
I strongly hope that all people around me will be healthy and happy. If I face a lot of trouble but the people around me are happy and supportive, I can deal with the trouble. I don't want a big house. I don't want to be rich. I just want a peaceful life.
After my husband's retirement, we will buy a small house in Shonan or Kamakura. And then we will have peaceful days until the day we die.

I'm sure you'll be an excellent mother someday.
